’60s Classics Rise and Shine in Sun City with California Dreamin'
By Michelle Larson, Communication Coordinator
Flower power, peace signs and tie dye are about to
make a triumphant comeback here in Sun City – at
least for one psychedelic night in March when the
singers of California Dreamin’ take the stage and fill
Magnolia Hall with the smooth sounds of the 1960s.
This musical revue commemorates the soft pop
groups that dominated the radio airwaves from 1965
to 1970, says Blake Pullen, writer and producer of
“It’s the era between folk and pop where the groups were putting
out really smooth, harmonious stuff,” he said. “There’s really no title to
describe it, but it’s a certain sound people associate with the ’60s.”
California Dreamin’ comes to Magnolia Hall for two shows: 5:30 p.m. and
8 p.m. Sunday, March 1. Tickets are $14 and available in Lifestyle Services
in Pinckney Hall.
“California Dreamin’ is going to be a nostalgic and fun musical ride
back to one of the greatest decades of the Sun City generation,” Lifestyle
Services Director Jackie Bates said. “And with such fantastic music at its focus,
this show is bound to have you singing along and tapping your toes!”
The California Dreamin’ set list is full of hits by the Mamas & the Papas,
The Carpenters, the 5th Dimension, The Association, Burt Bacharach
and Joni Mitchell, among others.
“You’ll not only hear songs you loved, but you’ll also hear songs
you probably haven’t heard in ages,” Blake
said. “Some of these songs were popular but
definitely don’t get radio play now.”
When Blake’s theater production company,
Pullen Productions, had the opportunity
to develop a 1960s revue, Blake decided
to narrow his scope instead of trying to
represent all aspects of a varied decade. “It’s
hard to sum up the ’60s because it was so diverse,” he said. “It’s
more common of ’60s shows to try to cover a little bit of all of it.
But there’s so much to cover. We decided it might be more fun to
get a little bit more specific so we could go more in depth with
The obvious themes were bubblegum pop, the Beatles or psychedelic
rock, but Blake wanted the show to standout from any
other similar production so he focused on the likes of the Mamas
& the Papas.
He called California Dreamin’ a fun, collaborative experience
between the audience and the performers. The fast-paced show
mixes music with bits of historical trivia as the cast members tell
stories about the bands and how their popular songs came to be
hits. The cast, two male singers and two female singers, also do
some dancing on stage.
“You can’t do a show about songs of the ’60s without doing a
few of the dance moves,” Blake said.
That goes for the costumes, too. The cast will show off iconic
threads of the 1960s, including bold British mod designs and
colorful hippie styles. And although California Dreamin’ isn’t billed
as a comedy show, “the audience will definitely get a few laughs,”
California Dreamin’ has been running for two years in the God &
Country Theatre in Branson, Missouri, and in 2014, the show began touring.
Because Blake’s company is based in Las Vegas, a version of California
Dreamin’ also takes the stage at Sun City and Del Webb communities
out west. Blake said Sun City audiences always have a great time, and he
looks forward to bringing the show to the East Coast.
“The ’60s were such a powerful decade for music, and age-wise,
we find that a lot of people really enjoy the show because the music
is timeless,” Blake said. But, he added, audiences like ones at Sun City
communities give the most powerful response because it’s the music of
“Most of the residents were the ones listening to this music in high
school and college. They remember where they were or what they were
doing when they first heard these songs,” he said. “Get ready to be swept
away in the great memories of that period!"
